What do I need to get started? Step #1
All you need to get started is a source for your fresh materials. One source, and a great one, is your local grocers. Many times they have walk in coolers with many types of flowers.

Keep a log of all lessons and results so you will be able to refer to them as needed. Record your successes and any problems.

One of the bouquets I have done. Don't you love orchids!
  Step #2
Buy just 1 carnation. You heard right. Just one. Also buy some floral preservative. You will need that to maintain your flower's vase life at the maximum amount of time.

You will also need a vase to hold your flower. Also a plastic bag big enough to fit over your flower.

Mix the preservative according to directions on the package using warm water(about 100 degrees). Make sure your vase is squeeky clean. Bacterial can clog your flower's stem and then the preservative solution will not nourish the flower.

Cut the stem at an angle under water. Put the flower into the vase. Leave it out for a couple of hours to get a good drink.

Now cover it and put it in the refrigerator.

Step #3
Leave it in the refrigerator for a week covered with the plastic bag. Then take it out and see how long it lasts in the vase. Be sure to add your results to your log.

Now buy a rose. This flower is conditioned differently. You do not leave it out to hydrate it. You may also need to cut your stems under preservative solution, rather than plain water if your water is hard. Or you may use filtered nonmineral water to make your solution. Minerals can block the stems in roses pretty easily.

Cut the stem at an angle under preservative solution (remove all leaves that will be below the water level),cover it and put it in the refrigerator, with a bag over it, overnight. The next day take it out and let it open.

Now cover it again and put it back in the refrigerator, covered. Leave it there for 3 days. Now take it out and see how long it lasts.

How did you do?
You probably did fine. You learned a lot about cut flowers from trying them one at a time. Just keep adding more flowers. Pick flowers that you might want to use for your bouquets.

This is a living wreath. No need for refrigeration for this centerpiece. It can be used with a floater bowl with pedestals as shown or with a hurricane.Just click the picture to be taken to the instructions on how to do this centerpiece.
